The build-up underneath is what separates paving that stays flat from paving that ripples and sinks. We excavate to a depth that suits the traffic, lay and compact road base, screed a consistent bedding layer, then lay, cut and compact the pavers before jointing sand goes in. Edge restraints are not optional: without them the outer courses creep outwards and the whole field loosens off over time. Driveways get thicker pavers and a deeper base than a garden path, because a car does not care how good the pattern looks.

We also repair and relay existing paving. Sunken sections, rutted driveways where the base was never adequate, weeds and ants working up through failed joints, and edges that have spread are all fixable, usually by lifting the affected area, correcting the base and relaying the same pavers. Re-sanding and sealing afterwards keeps joints stable and makes the surface easier to keep clean.

Almost every paving problem we are asked to fix traces back to the base. It is the part nobody sees, it is the easiest place to save a few hours, and it is the reason a driveway laid three summers ago now has wheel ruts in it. We dig to proper depth, compact in layers and check levels as we go, because no amount of care in the laying pattern compensates for a base that was rushed.

Drainage is the other thing we plan rather than hope about. A Sunshine Coast wet season puts water on a surface for weeks on end and a single storm puts a lot of it there at once, so paving that sits flat or falls the wrong way will pond, wash the jointing sand out and undermine the bedding layer. We set falls deliberately and make sure water has a defined exit before we start laying.
