Finish Options

The standard workhorse finish, created by dragging a broom across the surface to leave a fine texture. Gives reliable grip in the wet, which is why it remains the default for driveways, paths and side access. Affordable, low fuss and easy to keep clean.
The top layer of cement paste is washed or ground away to reveal the stone in the mix. You get a textured, naturally slip-resistant surface with real visual depth, and the stone choice sets the colour. A long-standing favourite for driveways and pool surrounds.
Patterned mats are pressed into the fresh surface to imitate pavers, slate, flagstone or timber, usually with colour worked through it. Gives you the look of individual units without the joints, sand and weeds that come with laying real pavers.
Diamond tooling grinds the cured slab progressively finer to a smooth, light-reflecting surface, sealed rather than coated. Best suited to interiors and covered areas, where it delivers a hard-wearing floor that needs little more than a mop.
Colour is either mixed through the concrete before it is poured or applied to the surface as a stain or hardener. Through-colour is the more durable of the two. Useful when you want the concrete to sit with the roof, render or landscaping.
Repeated trowelling closes the surface tight for a smooth, near-seamless result. Ideal for indoor slabs, garages and covered patios where a fine finish matters more than grip. We would not recommend it anywhere that gets wet and stays exposed.
Why It Matters
It also decides how long the surface lasts. Finishing is what closes off the top of the slab, and a properly finished surface resists water penetration, scaling and dusting far better than one that was rushed or worked at the wrong moment. Overworking fresh concrete, or troweling while there is still bleed water sitting on it, weakens the surface layer permanently. You cannot see that on handover day, but you will see it in a few years when the surface starts to break down.
And unlike most things on a concrete job, the finish is effectively permanent. Base preparation and reinforcement are hidden but fixable in principle; the finish is the visible outcome and it is set within hours. Grinding, resurfacing or replacement are the only ways back. That is why we would rather spend time on this conversation before the pour than have you live with a surface that does not suit the space.
Our Process
On the day, the sequence is about timing. Concrete is placed, screeded to level and floated to bring the surface together, then left to firm up. Judging that window is the whole skill: too early and you trap water in the surface, too late and the finish will not take. From there we apply whatever the chosen finish calls for, whether that is broom texture, colour hardener and stamping, or the trowelling passes for a smooth interior slab. Joints are cut where they belong rather than where they are convenient.
Curing is the step that quietly decides the outcome, and it is where corners get cut in this trade. We cure properly rather than leaving fresh concrete to dry out in the summer sun, because rapid moisture loss causes surface crazing and weakness. Once the slab has cured, any grinding, polishing or sealing follows, and we walk the finished surface with you before we leave.

Finishing is the least forgiving part of concreting and the easiest to get wrong. There is a narrow window where the surface can be worked, it closes at a completely different time on a thirty-eight degree January afternoon than on a still, eight-degree July morning, and there is no second attempt. Our concreters finish surfaces daily and read those conditions on the day rather than working to a fixed routine.
We also work in this climate constantly, which matters more than it sounds. A hot northerly brings the finishing window forward and can cause plastic shrinkage cracking within the hour, a cold morning holds bleed water on the surface far longer, and a change rolling through in the afternoon can ruin a slab that was not sheeted up. Those judgements come from pouring here rather than from a manual.
