Local ground conditions do a lot of the deciding here. Getting a machine down the side of a house, working within a metre of a boundary fence, and finding somewhere to put spoil when there is no room to stockpile all shape how the job is done. We size the machine to the access rather than the other way around, which sometimes means a smaller excavator and more truck movements, and we protect driveways, paths and gardens on the route in.

Commercial excavation is usually about volume, programme and coordination. There are bulk quantities to move, a schedule that other trades are relying on, and often traffic management, dust control and site documentation to deal with. Cut and fill balances matter more at that scale, because moving material once on site is far cheaper than carting it off and buying replacement fill back in.
